The Program of study leading to art certification at Webster is a practical program directed at preparing individuals to go into the work force. To complete this program, students must satisfactorily complete Art Department B.A. major requirements. These requirements, in addition to exceeding the state requirements for art certification, include admission to the department via Major Acceptance Review. Art Education students are subjected to the same level of evaluation as any other Art Major. the departmental program insures study in the four major disciplines of art; art production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. A basic goal of the program is to provide a varied an contemporary art education that reflects the current standards of professional art training. the enrollment for Art Education courses is eclectic, representing a variety of age levels and experimental backgrounds, from traditional-age undergraduates to season teaches seeking art specialization.

Within the departmental offering, two courses are intended to provide practical training and insight into the focused role of the art teacher. ART 3910 – Art for the Elementary Grades addresses the fundamental issues that connect art to the developmental states of individuals, to their subject areas, and to society in general. Current research in art education is examined for its ability to facilitate innovative solutions to basic art institutional problems. ART 4930 – Secondary Art Methods deals with fundamental issues confronting the secondary art teacher. In addition , students are encouraged to develop clearly articulated instructional ideas that are content based. Considerable attention is given to designing models of instructional units and sequences.

Webster’s program is intended to be consistent with the guidelines provided by the goal of the National Association of Schools of Art and design (an accrediting agency) which includes the implementing of instruction with integrates the study of aesthetics, art criticism, art history, and art production. The same requirements for other art majors (including participation in the appropriate Senior Exhibition) must be satisfied for this certification, including the following Art Education credit hours.
